Oportunidades para la promoción de inversiones e iniciativas del sector privado agropecuario

This paper discusses governmental programs designed to promote private investments on agricultural production, as well as existing private sector initiatives that have impact on deforestation and promotion of environmentally sustainable practices

Abstract

This paper discusses governmental programs designed to promote private investments on agricultural production, as well as existing private sector initiatives that have impact on deforestation and promotion of environmentally sustainable practices. Main conclusions and recommendations are:

  • There are not particular strategies or State programs aimed to promoting sustainable investments or to reduce deforestation at national or regional level.
  • Existing financial mechanisms and private sector initiatives have the potential to promote productive transformation processes in the Amazon. This means more training and dissemination of opportunities for producers, new financial incentives, and tools for performance monitoring and risk measurement, among others.
  • Exporting or multinational companies are more sensitive than national markets to the implementation of good practices required by international markets. Government and private sector have opportunities to promote strategies to raise awareness about sustainable production and deforestation.
  • Corporate decisions on sustainability obey to their strategies, not to their supply chains. Companies could be oriented about supply chain approach to integrate providers into their strategies. Government might incentivize these voluntary initiatives, in order to reduce deforestation.
