States and regions in the tropics are critical players in any successful strategy to slow the loss and speed the recovery of tropical forests at scale, but they are currently not developing the partnerships nor receiving the financial investments necessary to realize their potential. Tropical Forest Champions promotes the partnerships, market access, and investments that champion states and regions need to succeed.
Tropical Forest Champions is a system for registering, tracking, incentivizing, and facilitating partnerships with tropical forest states and regions that are on the pathway to sustainable development. It helps jurisdictions become safe havens for companies and investors to do business in, providing an urgently needed complement to the strategies that make it risky to do business in regions where deforestation is taking place. It helps governments and their partners share the progress they are making, creating mechanisms for celebrating and rewarding this progress. It helps governments, companies and investors who share a commitment to sustainable development find each other and collaborate.
Tropical Forest Champions aspires to help jurisdictions by:
• Finding investors and markets: Helping jurisdictions develop and publicize new low-carbon business opportunities, low-carbon product lines from farms, forests and fisheries, and opportunities for investment and donations
• Valuing carbon: Helping jurisdictions to monetize the carbon emissions reductions they achieve, through voluntary offset markets, carbon-labeling, regulated carbon markets and climate finance
• Modernization & Efficiency: Helping jurisdictions improve their “Ease of Doing Business” ranking and find other ways to attract new corporate partners
• Safe haven status: Helping jurisdictions become “safe havens” where companies and investors can engage without fear of being attacked by environmental advocacy groups
