Earth Innovation Institute is pleased to announce our program of activities at the upcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties 23 (COP23) in Bonn, Germany, November 6-17:

COP23 Official Side Event: The Balikpapan Challenge: A global framework for low-emission development in tropical forest regions.
In partnership with the Governors’ Climate and Forest Task Force (GCF), ProNatura, and INOBU, this side event will bring together GCF jurisdictions and implementing partners to present a shared vision and definition of success for reducing tropical deforestation and enhancing conservation, improved livelihoods, renewable energy, scalable incentive systems and human rights protection by 2020.

Closed working session on Commodity Production and Deforestation
In partnership with the GCF, EII is hosting a closed working session on Commodity Production and Deforestation. Participants in this invitation-only event will help develop a global strategy and framework for the Commodity Production and Deforestation pillar discussed at the GCF Task Force’s 2017 Annual Meeting in September. The process strives to integrate and scale efforts to curb tropical deforestation, advance the rights and livelihoods of indigenous peoples and local communities, and implement the finance mechanisms for inclusive, low emission development in tropical forest states and provinces around the world.

Closed working session of the GCF Indigenous Peoples (IP) and Local Communities (LC) Working Group
In partnership with the GCF, Mesoamerican Alliance of People and Forests (AMPB), Programa Regional de Investigación sobre Desarrollo y Medio Ambiente (PRISMA), Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Forest Trends, EII is hosting a meeting of the GCF IP and LC Working Group. The goal of this session is to advance partnerships between GCF member states and representatives of indigenous and community organizations to secure rights and livelihoods of forest-dependent populations while mitigating climate change.

From Balikpapan to Bonn…and Beyond – High-Level Discussion and Public Reception: Tropical forest governors and partners of the GCF showcase subnational leadership for climate and forests
In partnership with the GCF, and with support from Forest Trends, AMPB, PRISMA, and EDF, EII will be hosting the signature GCF Task Force event featuring a roundtable discussion with GCF governors, indigenous and community leaders and corporate partners, who will discuss their commitments to fight climate change through reducing deforestation and implementing finance mechanisms for inclusive, low emission development to advance the rights and livelihoods indigenous and local communities.
