Science & Scenarios
At Earth Innovation Institute, we believe that rigorously established evidence and broad dissemination of information are the basis for good policy-making and progressive social change. To that end, we design and conduct research and analysis driven by the environmental and socioeconomic challenges tropical nations face.
Together with our partners, we study diverse elements of these challenges including the nature of contract arrangements between smallholders and logging and agriculture companies, the impacts of fire and drought on rainforest ecology, the financial and policy barriers to sustainable land-use, and methods for assessing fisheries and forest stocks at community levels.
Because we know that not all decision-makers have access to important evidence even when it exists, we also work to build awareness and understanding of available information among all actor groups to facilitate better decision-making at all levels. We employ scenarios analysis as a key tool to achieving all of these objectives. We use scenarios to engage actors in discussions of plausible alternative futures, as well as to develop sophisticated computer models to evaluate the impacts of the alternatives on a range of ecological, social and economic indicators.
