How taming Amazon deforestation can win votes

As long as political leaders of tropical forest states and nations see forest clearing as a way to win votes, forests will continue to fall. Brazil's steep decline in Amazon deforestation rates was possible largely because it became politically viable for Presidents and Governors to support it. The most durable political case for slowing Amazon deforestation is found in the remote state of Acre, where the fight against forest clearing is embedded in a broader economic and social agenda that is widely supported among Acre's voters. This is the focus of EII's Dan Nepstad's new blog for the World Economic Forum Agenda. The blog was released as part of the Tropical Forest Alliance 2020 NYC Climate Week 2016 event on Climate Action and Sustainable Land Use in Forestry and Agriculture. Earth Innovation Institute is a TFA 2020 partner organization and co-sponsor of the event.
