Advancing Smallholder Participation in Sustainable Palm Oil Production

On April 20th a 4-partite MOU was signed between the provincial government of Central Kalimantan, the district government of Kotawaringin Barat, Unilever and EII’s Indonesian sister organization Inobu. The aims of the MOU are to jointly support the Development of Sustainable Oil Palm Plantations, by means of implementing the jurisdictional certification approach, starting with increased participation of smallholder farmers in sustainable oil palm cultivation and productivity practices – an advance that will improve the welfare of smallholder farmers while at the same time protecting forests. The MOU, which was signed on the sideline of Unilever’s visit to Kotawaringin Barat district’s smallholders’ certification pilot site in Pangkalan Tiga village - set to become the first sustainable palm oil village in Indonesia - serves as the first public-private-partnership agreement involving global palm oil buyers and local governments in supporting jurisdictional sourcing of sustainable palm oil globally.
