Representatives of seven Brazilian Amazon state environmental agencies, along with the national Ministry of Environment and National Indigenous Foundation, came together in Brasilia last week for a workshop focused on developing state-level indigenous programs related to climate change mitigation policies. The workshop, hosted by the Government of Acre’s Climate Change Institute, and organized by Earth Innovation Institute, in collaboration with partners IPAM, Forest Trends, and the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force, provided an opportunity for Brazilian state and federal government representatives to share knowledge and discuss ways to ensure broad representation of indigenous peoples in consultations and dialogues related to climate change mitigation programs. All seven of the states represented at the workshop - Amapá, Amazonas, Acre, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, and Tocantins – are members of the Governor’s Climate and Forests Task Force, a unique subnational collaboration seeking to advance a jurisdictional approach to low emission rural development.
