Learning Exchange Begins Between Acre, Brazil and Madre de Dios, Peru

Madre de Dios, a forest-rich jurisdiction in southeastern Peru, is taking the initial steps to design and implement a Low-Emission Rural Development Strategy for the Region. To that aim, the Regional Government, together with Earth Innovation Institute, MDA, WWF, and MINAM/UN-REDD+ Program, organized a learning exchange on March 28-29 for technical experts and managers from Acre State, Brazil and Madre de Dios. Madre de Dios Regional Governor Luis Hidalgo Okimura attended the event, providing the opening address: “Our priority is to design a Low-Emission Rural Development Strategy, which will define the transformation of the region toward increasing and strengthening the productive sector in a sustainable manner, reducing deforestation, conserving biodiversity and ecosystem services, and involving all key actors in the sustainable development of the region.” Stakeholders from Madre de Dios were able to learn from the successful experiences in Acre, including both public and private-sector initiatives for sustainability. EII’s National Program Coordinator in Brazil, Monica de los Rios, presented Acre’s State System of Incentives for Environmental Services (SISA) program, which provides incentives for reducing emissions of carbon to the atmosphere from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), and is one of the most advanced jurisdictional programs for sustainability in the world. EII’s National Program Coordinator in Peru, Gustavo Suarez de Freitas, provided the context for the Peruvian Amazon in a final panel session, highlighting how Madre de Dios can work with other Amazonian Regions in developing inter-regional initiatives for sustainability. Present at the event were technical teams from the Madre de Dios Regional Government, the Ministry of Environment (MINAM), and civil society levitra bucodispersable opiniones representatives from other Peruvian Amazon Regions (Amazonas, Loreto, Ucayali, San Martín and Huánuco), and technical specialists from both the public and private sector in Acre. At the end of the event, Governor Hidalgo signed the resolution calling for the development of a LED-R Strategy and signed an MOU of collaboration with NGO partners for collaboration in this participatory process.
