PERCEPTIONS OF THE VALUE OF REGIONAL CONSERVATION AREAS IN LORETO, PERU: INSIGHTS FROM LOCAL COMMUNITIES
This study, developed by the Earth Innovation Institute with support from Re:Wild and the Andes Amazon Fund (AFF), investigates local perceptions regarding the ecological, economic, and sociocultural value of Loreto’s Regional Conservation Areas (RCAs). It was conducted as part of the 2024 Regional Conservation Areas Management Update Process, led by the Regional Government of Loreto. The research draws on qualitative data gathered from assemblies, workshops, and interviews in the four established RCAs and control zones.
The study underscores the pivotal role of community participation in the co-management of biodiversity, both within the RCAs and throughout their zones of influence. Local testimonies reveal a widespread perception of wildlife recovery, improved food security, and enhanced environmental stewardship. At the same time, it identifies structural challenges including limited monetization of natural resources, conflicts over resource access, and emerging tensions due to increased human-wildlife interactions.
By documenting these perceptions, the report contributes critical insights for improving governance models, reinforcing institutional collaboration, and promoting inclusive policies that integrate biodiversity conservation with local development needs.
