Wildfire is the single biggest threat to Amazon and Cerrado forests, destroying farms and livelihoods. This high risk traps farmers in a cycle of poverty, as they avoid investing in sustainable, high-value crops because a single fire could wipe them out. The "Innovation Counties" program—a joint effort by the Earth Innovation Institute and Aliança da Terra—is a county-wide strategy to break this cycle. It works by reducing wildfire risk to create two positive outcomes. Economically, lower risk encourages investment in profitable, resilient farming. Ecologically, it allows forests to regrow and act as natural fire breaks. The strategy is built on local training, farmer collaboration, and inclusive governance.
