Advancing Jurisdictional Sustainability During Oslo REDD Week

Last week, the Oslo REDD Exchange brought together 500 REDD+ policy makers and practitioners from around the world to discuss perspectives and experiences on reducing GHG emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing nations. The event, which featured presentations by Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, UNEP head Eric Solheim and US Secretary of State, John Kerry, included a panel on Jurisdictional Sourcing moderated by EII Executive Director Dan Nepstad highlighting emerging commitments to source commodities in a manner that strengthens jurisdictional strategies for low-emission rural development. One such commitment moved closer towards becoming reality the following day in Oslo when EII and Solidaridad China supported negotiation of a historic agreement between China’s CSIA and Brazil’s Aprosoja for the sustainable sourcing of soy from Mato Grosso.   Capping-off an exciting week in the Norwegian capital, EII and our partners in the Forests, Farms and Finance Initiative (3FI) hosted a Jurisdictional Sourcing Roundtable where we were joined by members of the private sector, governments, NGOs and philanthropic community in a discussion of the jurisdictional sustainability model, where success is measured “wall-to-wall’ across an entire jurisdiction encompassing the full range of activities, production systems, ecosystems and actors.
