Indigenous Peoples and Governors Building Partnerships

Balikpapan, Indonesia September 28, 2017 Indigenous Peoples and Local Community leaders sat down with Governors from the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force (GCF), a subnational alliance of 38 states and provinces dedicated to climate change mitigation, to share a proposal to strengthen collaboration during the GCF annual meeting here this week. “Climate change is not just a problem for indigenous peoples, it is not just a problem for governors. It is everyone’s problem. We must work together," reflects Candido Mezua, of the Mesoamerican Alliance of People and Forests. GCF members convened to launch the Balikpapan Roadmap, a two year action plan for curbing tropical deforestation, advancing the rights and livelihoods of indigenous peoples and local communities, and implementing the finance mechanisms for inclusive, low emission development. Indigenous and community leaders and GCF member governments have already been working together to develop joint actions through the Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Working Group to the GCF. In this video, Indigenous and local government leaders share their hopes for a collaborative partnership to strengthen and amplify efforts in the fight against deforestation and climate change.
