EII Hosts Dialogue Between Cooperatives and Companies on Commercializing Low-Carbon Products in Acre State, Brazil

Earth Innovation Institute, together with Acre’s Network of Sustainable Businesses (RANS), hosted a meeting on April 4th for cooperatives, companies, and local producers to share experiences and discuss future commercial opportunities for marketing low-carbon products from Acre State, Brazil. The meeting was attended by 70 representatives from Acre government, local companies, civil society, and the 13 Acrean cooperatives that form RANS. Together, they identified the need to improve the processing of their products in order to market them in supermarkets and shops in Acre. The lack of information regarding improved processing is one of the major challenges small producers face in reaching these larger markets. This dialogue and others like it are necessary for these producers to share information regarding pathways for reaching markets that can provide them with a higher valorization for their products. A major outcome of the meeting was a list of needs to be worked on by each sector – government, cooperatives (producers), and civil society. Each of these sectors plays an important role in improving the value chain for sustainable products, and should work together to support the initiatives of small producers. As one of RANS’ civil society partners, Earth Innovation Institute aims to strengthen and support the work of these cooperatives to produce sustainable, low-carbon products without increasing deforestation. Support for the event came from NORAD, through EII’s Forest, Farms and Finance project and its projects with UNDP/GCF-Acre.
